WELCOME TO MIDAS, NEVADA!
A century-old mining town, Midas is located in the heart of Nevada’s cattle ranching and gold mining country. The largest nearby Nevada towns are Elko (90 miles away), Winnemucca (60 miles), and Battle Mountain (50 miles). Although only a few people reside year-round in Midas, many more people consider it home, even if only for the occasional weekend, and they have embraced the history of this special place. The enthusiastic members of Friends of Midas have restored the cemetery and the jail; collected numerous photographs and memorabilia; built replicas of pertinent buildings, such as a blacksmith’s shop and a 1920s-era gas station; planted trees in town; and constructed a park that displays old ranching equipment. Dedicated to the memory of the town’s much-loved and much-missed schoolhouse, Friends of Midas continues to compile and share the stories about this small corner of Nevada through various projects. Most recently, the group donated to numerous school and public libraries in Nevada a copy of the book A Century of Enthusiasm: Midas, Nevada, 1907-2007, which was written by a charter member of Friends of Midas and published through the generosity of Newmont Mining Corporation.
